Telling an Authentic Story – One of the best Online Strategies

Online Strategies with Seth Godin

Seth Godin, has written books like “The Purple Cow”, and “All Marketers are Liars”, and “Permission Marketing.”. He is a genius when it comes to marketing and has one of the most popular blogs in the world out of gazillions of blogs. Seth’s Blog

Telling Stories

“Before we tell a story, we have to tell it to ourselves. The goal of every marketer is to create a ‘purple cow’. A product, or experience so remarkable, people feel compelled to tell someone about it. Remarkable goods and services help ideas spread. Not hype filled advertising. The best way to do that is craft a story that someone is able to tell to themselves. Build (your) organization by telling a story, and you dramatically increase the chances that the story gets told.” -Seth Godin in “All Marketers Are Liars” (He obviosly speaks of this concept in “Purple Cow” as well)

What is the BEST online Strategy?

We would like to think that we just want the facts, but in marketing that simply isn’t true. Seth Godin understands that customers and consumers buy a story. They do not necessarily buy the facts. People buy a Toyota Prius because they have a certain world view. Don’t make the mistake in marketing that all people have the same world views. The engineers of the Prius told themselves a very specific story before they created the Prius.

I’m personally not a fan of the Prius, but the people who buy them, tell everyone about how “smart” the car is. For example, even the keys on the Prius are “smart”. The car “knows” that it is you, when you walk up. The key has a sensor that allows you access to the car. Walk up, open the door and push the start button on your glorified golf cart. (Did I say that out loud?) This is a “purple cow” concept.

Some people don’t have that world view. You are not telling your story to everyone. Don’t be afraid of turning off some people. The Prius story is not targeting muscle car enthusiasts. That’s OK. I’m not arguing which world view is correct. They all are in the eyes of each individual consumer. This brings up another important point in marketing. It is a mistake to market to the masses. Target your marketing. The fact that I’m personally not a fan of the Prius, doesn’t matter.

If you haven’t read “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin, let me back up a bit. Imagine driving on a family vacation through Iowa, and lets assume you haven’t seen too many cows in your life. When you see the first few cows, it is interesting. But after driving through Iowa and Nebraska for a few hours you see tons of cows. Seeing cows no longer is all that exciting. But what if you saw a “Purple Cow”? Now that is a story, is worth talking about!

Lessons From “All Marketers Are Liars.”

“All marketers are Liars” Intereting title. He chose it carefully. When you read the book, you realize that Seth does not think that ALL marketers are liars, and he gives a tongue lashing to those who are not authentic. It is in your best interest to tell an authentic story. You see people all over the internet claiming to make 20k per month, 100k per month, blah blah blah. If you are tempted to tell that story, it better be authentic, but you still run the risk of breaking another rule in marketing. People don’t give two cents about YOU. They want to tell themselves a story that impacts THIER life. Fool some people once or twice and you might make a sale.

“(You can) fool some people once or twice. Once fooled a person will never repeat your story to someone else. The cost of your perception is too high.” – Seth Godin

If you have ever experienced “Old School Network Marketing”, watch this video and ask yourself… Does it pass the test of being AUTHENTIC? Is it targeted to a specific audience with a specific world view? Does it provide a solution to a specific problem?

If that video offends you, you are probably no longer reading this article. That is perfectly OK. Does it pass the test of being AUTHENTIC? Is it targeted to a specific audience with a specific world view? Does it provide a solution to a specific problem?

This video is first of all authentic. You can probably tell I have experienced this first hand and it speaks directly to those who have had the same frustrations. (targeted marketing) It subtly promises a solution to a problem in the world of network marketing. That is… MLM, or network marketing is not a WAY to market. It is a great business model. It is great way for the average person to create residuals, but it is not the best way, or even a good way for most people to market. The industry facts support my claim, but why does the story sell at least initially?oldschoolMLM

“I still say that your are missing the opportunity of a lifetime…
Even though my life is about to be over.”

“Old School Network” marketing has worked for over 50 years because it tells a story that some people are able to believe and tell themselves. Enough people have experienced this frustration. They know that some people are making money with network marketing, but it just doesn’t seem to work for them. Those are the people that appreciate the above video, and I’m going to teach you exactly how to target that audience with YOUR own authentic story. This blog is a collabortion of every single marketing training, marketing tool, and marketing strategies I’ve used over the last few years to make a significant income online.
