Finding Strength In Adversity…A True Story

Overcoming Adversity

Have you ever been completely kicked in the teeth?  Have you ever been fired, or laid off from your job?  Have you ever experienced a devastating loss of a friend.  An unexpected death or loss of the love of your life?

Sometimes we can find strength through adversity.  We all have experienced some devastating things in life.  That is just how life works.  How you deal with it is the key.  Sometimes these events come one at a time. Sometimes they come all at once.

I want to share with you a personal story that completely took the wind out of my sail.  I was down for the count for quite some time.  I could not eat.  I could not sleep.  I could not function.

I know that others have had far more serious events occur in their life.  I assure you I feel for you.  It never helps to hear from your friends and family, that

“Things happen for a reason.”  Or “You will find this as a blessing in the end.”

Your friends mean well, but sometimes there is nothing that anybody can say to help.

Finding Strength In Adversity

Like I said before, I know there are people out there who are much worse off.  I will tell you that recent events in my life, completely knocked me out of commission for several days.  Have you ever experienced that?

My recent personal story and what I did to dig myself out of that pit.  So what did I do?  After several days of not moving, not eating, not sleeping, and quite literally not functioning, I decided to focus on the one area in my life that I had control over.

So what happened?  I was a helicopter pilot by trade.  I guess I still am, but I am not currently employed.  I received a phone call from my company that would change the direction of my life.  Quite possibly the best thing that ever happened to me.  I was informed in this phone call that the company “No longer needed my services.”
Wow!!  Big shock, but I was not all that upset about it.  I knew this would be the kick in the pants to really get things going with my business.  I was also looking forward to working on my relationship.  Being away from your loved ones can really take a toll on any relationship.  You see, with my job I was away for two weeks a month.  I was in Arizona working for two weeks straight and home for two weeks straight.

I knew my business was going well…not quite to the point of retirement, but I knew this was a huge opportunity all the way around.  Within a couple of days, all hell broke loose in my life.  3 days later, I lost what I considered the love of my life.  This also meant I lost what I considered my home.  And the worst part of it is, this whole thing was entirely my fault.  I didn’t realize it at the time…but the way I was living my life pushed away those I cared about most.  It was only a matter of time.

So, as I said I was really looking forward to this opportunity.  Then the walls came crashing down.  No home, no income security from a job a really liked, and no more comfort and inspiration from the one person I looked to, to inspire me.  Like I said, I could not function.  If you know me, I am typically someone to look to for inspiration.   I Mr. Positive.  I always look at the opportunities, the possibilities, the lesson, in any adversity.

I shocked myself because I could not seem to look at anything in the world from the “glass is half full” department.

So onto the solution.  I finally picked myself up, dusted myself off, and decided to focus on the one thing I could control.  I needed a place to live.  Thankfully I have some support from family members who took me in temporarily, just until I could function again.

Staying with your parents at age 38 in a huge blow to your ego.  Not only could I not function, but I was out of my environment that I have worked so well in for quite some time.  I had screaming grandchildren, running all over.  There were toys everywhere.  No real privacy to do the things I needed to do to get myself back on my feet.  I know there are solutions out there, if you look for them, but I was not in the right mind frame at the time.

I smile now, because I know that I am back on track and things are/will be not only OK, but even better than ever.  I have decided that I am NOT ever going back to work for somebody else.  Watch this video.  I started focusing on the one thing that I can control and that is my destiny.

I know there are a lot of people out there suffering.  I feel for you.  I really do.  I also know that there are a lot of people out there taking charge of their own destiny so they don’t have to face the dreaded conversation of “We no longer need your services.”

I also know that it takes time to build a very successful long term business.  What is needed most is cash to fund your business and to invest in your future.  I want to share with you exactly how I pulled myself out of the biggest pit I’ve ever been in.  I started with the one thing that could really get my life back on track and that is income to survive.  Not only to thrive, but to survive.  When you are seeking solutions, they come at you like never before.

The rest of the stuff will work it self out eventually…but I had no choice but to take massive action, and this is exactly how I did it.  Check it out here.

Great story Nick! Everyone has faced adversity, but few have the courage to take it head on! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Bro! Sometimes it’s hard to “See the forest through the trees.” After you spend a few days not moving…taking action and getting moving really brings clarity…Not that the struggles instantly go away, but they start to diminish day after day.

hey Nick…good to hear your story…sorry to hear that some ‘chapters’ have been a bit ‘rough’. I commend you for your transparency, as I know it’s not always easy.
It’s great to see you rising ‘above and beyond’ the adversity…above the clouds, right?
In doing so you are inspiring others to face their own ‘trials and tribulations’ head on.
Your entire post is insightful, and thanks for sharing the info on your new venture…it sounds great!

    Nick,
Thank you for having the courage to share your story and bring life down to the “real” level for so many people. Adversity can often be the thing that catapults a person to the next level in life. You have an opportunity here to create your own destiny. I’m glad to see you are maintaining the positive attitude and keeping your dreams alive in the face of challenging circumstances. I’m cheering for your success!

I appreciate that Krista. It was hard to look at anything for a while as positive. That is so foreign to me. I didn’t know how to be, act, or even think. I”M BACK!!

    Hi Nick,
It opens my heart, when I’ve been touch by the courage of people like you. If you agree I would love to take your story as an example in sessions to show a client how to face challenges. I sometimes say “Take your fear what’s going to happen in both hands and walk your path”. That’s what you did. Thank you so much – a lot of supporting energy is flowing your way.

I have chills Leelja. Like I said, I know that many others have it worse off. All the events that occurred in my life happened within a couple of days. There is even more that happened that I didn’t discuss. It was really weird. Thank you for your inspiration. I’m focusing on one thing at a time and going full force with that one thing. The rest will fall into place as meant to be.

Nick. Thank you for being so open to sharing your story with us. It is amazing how every time I face some type of adversity, it inspires me to make changes and move in a new direction that ends up improving the overall quality of my life. While we all would rather avoid adverse circumstances, it is always good to know that in most cases it will just make us stronger and better off in the long run. Thanks again.

This has pushed me to focus on the one thing that I can control…And at least in that one area, I’m thriving better than ever. Thanks so much for stopping by…Going to check our blog right now.

Life is about change and of course how we overcome them. You’ve found your niche again. Great job! What’s important is to claim the good, even when we don’t see anything in those depressing moments that confronts us. It’s one step at a time that brings our mind receptive to one thought at a time, which turns our world right side up once more. Yes, we all experience life and don’t escape its ups and downs in our daily journey in life. I’ve had my share too, as we all have, but in such diversity are given insight and strength to help one see more clearly and, most importantly, to listen to the still, small voice within that guides our footsteps. I’ve written about mine in Mommy’s Writing: Mommy, would you like a sandwich? Like you, it requires courage to tell of one’s life. But it’s in the giving of one’s story, so other’s may also be blessed, is our joy in reflecting our heavenly Father’s gift of abundance to his creation of whom we are his own. I’m so happy for your success and your joy in the freedom to be your own boss whose employer is God.

Thank you Suzanne, and YES I would LOVE a sandwich…ha ha

You are so right…we sometimes have to go through hard times, and it’s how we deal with them that counts. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Posted by Suzanne on August 10, 2010 at 8:14 am

You’re welcomed Nick! Your new found freedom is joyful and I just know it will continue to be successful, as your desire is a prayer, which never goes unanswered with our boss whose success is unmeasured. Thanks for my smile this morning, as I read that you’d like to have a sandwich. It’s the sandwiches in life, which sometimes have the most impact on one’s journey. In my case, it was a lifesaver in every conceivable way. It’s the best sandwich in life for me, which never fails to keep me humble. Like you, prayerfully my footsteps remain solidly planted on God’s path of success. Life is good, as it should be for every one whose priorities are correct. Thanks for the tip about Mobile Marketing! I’m forever learning, as is the way of life.

    Nick,
I’m glad to see you have found ground and center again. Life throws us curve balls all the time. How we handle adversity shows how strong we truly are. Everything happens in it’s own time for it’s own reasons.

You have stepped through to a stronger you. That’s what counts. Thanks for being so transparent and open. This takes courage. Shame, blame or guilt have no place in your thoughts. I like Donna’s comment about bouncing back higher. You will too!

    Strength and centering to you,

    Aloha Nick,

Congratulations on finding your strength through the “strong winds”. Jim Rohn says “You can’t change the winds, but you can learn to set your sail”. The winds blow on all of us, however, learning how to use the winds to go even further is the key.

Sounds like you’ve set your sail well. Thank you for sharing and for being transparent.

I am just meeting you and getting to know you – looks like I walked in one of those significant upheavals that just – happen. OK – I’m outta here! – Just kidding. Yes, taking action is the way to go. Even if that action is to just whistle a little tune, it gives power for the next action. Maybe you just need to buy your own helicopter?

Welcome to the Empowered Tribe Community. I just saw something interesting. Google has changed it’s criteria for what websites show up in the organic search.

According to Ryan Deis the criteria is 1/3 Content, 1/3 Backlinks, and 1/3 Activity…

That is good news for the Tribe members and you have stepped into the community at the exact right time…

PS…The helicopter is for sure in the 3 year plan.

    Nick,

Thank you for sharing so openly. You are dealing with a bunch of stuff right now but if it does not kill you it will make you stronger. Keep your chin up and keep fighting the fight. Last week I had a major blow up that cost me a fortune, I did the same thing and went to work marketing, the one thing I could control at the time.

Let me know if I can help you in any way and I look forward to building our relationship as part of the empowered tribe.

Thanks Jeff. The Tribe always has your back. I agree 100%…”Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit.” — Napoleon Hill
I knew this logically at the time, but for the first time in my life, I couldn’t rely on my logic…by taking action I was able to come out ahead and better than ever. I couldn’t see “the forest through the trees”, for a short period of time. It was the longest month of my life. I’m thankful it was only that long…Update…Things couldn’t be better. Thanks

Brilliant story Nick! Everyone has their stories of troubles, but most whine and complain and never move on or try to make their life better. It’s always refreshing to stumble across someone who has. Well done.
