I’m going to offend some of you… Plus one of my best twitter tips. How to Use Twitter and Tweetdeck To Create a Massive Following of Ravenous Fans.
Those of you who get offended and don’t read the entire post are missing out on a 7 figure tip…
Marketing online has so many advantages. It’s amazing the power of all the tools we have available at our disposal these days. We have so much power at the end of our mouse it’s amazing. Think about it. I’m sitting in the Pheonix airport in between flights and I have the ability to communicate a very important message to my tribe, my followers, and and my friends. Excuse me while a take a sip of my Stella Artois…
Ok I’m back. Obvious advantage. I sipping on an adult beverage listening to the music in the background and I’m working. I’ve had a desk job before. In fact I’ve had several. I remember having chest pains in my mid 20′s every night because I dreaded going to work. I can assure you that I’m not stressed in any way right now. So with that being said onto the important stuff…
I wanted to share with you some marketing tips that I use daily. Let’s talk about twitter today. I was listening to Seth Godin. If you haven’t heard of Seth before, legend has it that he has the 11th most popular blog in the world. You can’t even count the number of blogs out there. This guy has something to say and people are listening.
I want to talk about Tribes. Yes that’s right…Tribes. If you would like to hear Seth talk about this visit Seth’s Blog (hyperlink). A Tribe has a leader who has something important to talk about. A tribe also has followers who can’t wait to hear what the leader of the tribe is going to say next. There have always been tribes, but the internet and social media make it easier for you and me to be that leader with something important to talk about. These tools do not make a tribe, they facilitate the communication with the tribe.
In other words just because you have 10,000 followers on twitter and have all kinds of friends on facebook does not mean anybody is listening. The tools facilitate, but you have to have something of substance to discuss. What value are you bringing to the table. A tribe’s leader talks about things that move people to action.
Tip: You are making a big mistake online if you feel like you have to please everyone. Creating a massive following…creating a tribe of ravenous fans does not come by straddeling both sides of the fence. It comes by expressing what you believe and taking a stand. “Are you a middle of the road type person?” Have you ever noticed that the only thing in the middle of the road is “road kill”.
Let me give you an example. Warning…I might offend a few of you.
You can’t please everyone. Why even try. Be yourself and be authentic. If you believe in something and want to express it, don’t worry that someone might take offense. People can choose to be offended and leave your blog, or they can choose to make a nasty comment and spread that to their like minded friends. All the better. You don’t need to, or want to please everyone when it comes to building a tribe or marketing online. I don’t make it a habit of discussing politics on my articles, but I’m stating one of my opinions here to prove a point. I don’t care that something may seem controversial. In fact it makes my blogs more appealing to those that agree with me and repels those who don’t. Not only that, those that disagree with me will make nasty comments. SWEET. That is just one more link back to my blog.
Let the Offending Begin.
Al Gore. I am not a fan of Al Gore whatsoever, and I think the Global Warming is one big hoax. GASP! Did I say that out loud. That’s a discussion and debate for another day, but the point here is Al Gore is a Tribal Leader and he has ravenous fans, just waiting to hear what he has to say next. He is not stradling the fence. He chose a side, created a massive following of ravenous fans, and as a result is a multi-multi-millionare. Oh you thought he created this movement because he cares about the polar bears? Ok Ok…I’m done upsetting some of you.
Now that I’ve alienated about 67% of you, let’s move on to some meat and potatoes. I want to show you one tool that I use daily that helps me communicate with my Tribe. You see, most people just think that if they spam their link out to 10,000 fans they are in business. Not true.
Let’s start creating real relationships. A good friend of mine, Jonathan Budd, once said there is a formula to success. Knowledge + Skills + Motivation/Heart + a network = $$$$ Success.
If you start with motivation and heart you can acquire knowledge and skills. Twitter makes it easy for you and I to facilitate the building of a network. Building a tribe has never been easier, but you have to do it right. Let’s go out ther and create some real networks, some real friends and help each other out. RT (Retweet) valuable content, be a “Go-Giver”… This is a 7 Figure Networker secret.
One twitter tool that I use every day is TWeetdeck. I’m going to show you why in the video below. Check it out. If you are offended please RT to your friends and have them bash me. If you found value in this post, RT and share it with your friends.
PS…
I wrote this article with a purpose to prove the point. Sneaky little trick #27…
Controversial gets traffic on the web. I’m not trying to offend anyone, but I think people have opposing opinions on a variety of subjects. That is why the internet is so cool. An open forum of debate is extremely healthy. Did you know that people in Iran get the real news by going to twitter.
Twitter tip two.
Go to hashtag.org
Iranians are typing in filtered topics with a # (hash tag) and the keyword Iran…to se what is really going on in their country. An open forum. TWITTER. Who knew 141 characters had so much power. Let’s stop being politically correct and say what you really believe. Open debate is good. Your tribe of ravenous fans will thank you.

Nick,
Thanks for being authentic and providing this great post. Between the tribe syndication, being authentic and the Twitter tip… wow you really gave a lot in this one! I really resonated with the point you made by being yourself.
The story of Al Gore is spot on. He did make a stand, bring awareness to his cause… and yes he did benefit richly because of it. A true marketer, and guess what, you don’t have to like him! We need to be ourselves because everyone else is taken.
Keep bringing the gold!

Dr. Jon…
You have some great examples of Authenticity on your blog. I would have never known you were a glider pilot otherwise. It’s important to let people get to know the real you. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks Nick! I know that you wrote this post over 4 months ago, before we even met, but this was exactly what I needed to hear today. I have been a little worried that some people may take offense to my post today, and you have made me realize that I shouldn’t worry about it. I was speaking from the heart, and that is exactly what I should do.
Thanks for the great reminder to be authentic.

Hey Melissa, Long time no speak. Isn’t that amazing that sometimes the solution just pops up at the exact right time. Sometimes you are not doing anyone any favors by “Sugar Coating” things.
Mwahahaha… I couldn’t agree more with you about Al Gore and Global Warming!…that being said… thanks for the awesome post which I came across via the Unified Tribe.
I appreciate your incredible value and look forward to getting to know you in the tribe!

Nick – Being authentic is very important even if it means some people may not agree with you. I also love Tweetdeck too! It is an awesome tool to keep your Twitter stuff straight!

Hey Glyna. You are absolutely right…If everyone agreed with your point of view how fun would life be. Vanilla blogs get no traffic. Authenticity does not mean you have to hide your opinions. Controversy is not a bad thing.
